“You’ll learn to lower your expectations about what you can accomplish in a day. Some days, it will be all you can do to keep a baby safe, warm, and fed, and that will be enough” — Unknown
San Antonio Postpartum Doula
In a time when our connection to the village is distant, postpartum doulas step in to bridge that gap.
Postpartum doulas are like gentle guides during the postpartum journey, tending to the emotional, physical, informational, and advocacy needs of the whole family.
Whether offering support during the day or through the quiet of the night, for a short while or an extended period, their focus remains on caring for the parent, the newborn, and the household.
What is my postpartum doula process?
In my role as a postpartum doula, I aim to understand your family’s needs and desires, assisting you in crafting a plan to achieve them, whether or not I’m present. During my time with you, I address the wants and needs within my capacity, seamlessly integrating myself into your family dynamics. I meet you where you are, providing support tailored to your unique circumstances.

Frequently Asked Questions
While all these professionals help the family there is a difference.
Babysitters: A babysitter is typically engaged for shorter durations, primarily focusing on caring for babies or children. They do not handle household tasks, and parents are responsible for meal preparation. Babysitters are often left alone for extended periods.
Nanny: A nanny typically collaborates with families to provide childcare and manage household responsibilities during the daytime, whether or not parents are present. Their primary focus revolves around caring for children and handling various household tasks. They can work with children of all ages.
Night nurses: A night nurse typically cares for newborns during the night, and while they may not always be licensed or registered nurses, they possess specialized training in infant care, development, CPR, and the expertise to manage multiple infants with special needs or medical conditions. They usually work with newborns for the first couple of weeks.
Postpartum doula: A postpartum doula gently embraces the four pillars of care—offering emotional, physical, informational, and advocacy support during the tender postpartum period for the entire family. Whether by day or overnight, for a brief period or an extended stay, they center their care on the parent, newborn, and the household. In their nurturing role, postpartum doulas bring knowledge of postpartum healing for the birthing parent, a focus on the well-being of both parents and gentle guidance on meeting needs while fostering lasting health.
No. Postpartum means after birth and is different from a diagnosis of postpartum depression or anxiety. Postpartum doulas can help with someone who has postpartum depression or anxiety but we also help with all families who need support after their birth.
Postpartum doulas are great for families who have no support nearby, single parents, parents with multiples, c-section or vaginal birth recovery, premie babies, parents who have experienced trauma, etc.
No, postpartum doulas may know the basics of lactation and positioning, we are not a lactation counselor or IBCLC. We do not do weighted feeds, or have as in-depth training on breastfeeding or bottle-feeding challenges. We will refer out if your challenge requires an in-depth solution.
Most postpartum doulas will work with a family up to six months (sometimes longer) post-birth. Some postpartum doulas will work with families switching into a different role like a nanny or a babysitter.
